Knowing the quality of water is imperative if the water is meant for drinking or agricultural purposes. The spatial and temporal groundwater quality in the Heuningnes Catchment was investigated, and its appropriateness for irrigation and drinking purposes was considered. Thirty-one samples were collected and analysed for physical (pH, EC, TDS) and chemical (Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , HCO 3 − , Cl − , SO 4 2−) parameters. Maps demonstrating the spatial and temporal distribution of groundwater quality were constructed using Geographical Information System software. These maps indicate variations in the concentration of various water quality parameters in the region. Groundwater in the region is mostly alkaline and is categorised as either fresh, brackish or saline based on TDS classification. Using Piper diagrams, it is shown that Na +-Cl − water type is the main water type in the area. The quality is mostly influenced by chemical weathering of rockforming minerals. Over 50% of groundwater in the region is not fit for drinking purposes as established from WHO (2011) and SANS241 criteria. Following SAR criteria, looking at Na%, PI, MH, KR and salinity hazard for irrigation assessment, it was discovered that shallow groundwater in the region was not fit for irrigation purposes. However, groundwater from deeper boreholes proved otherwise. The study has shown that not all-available groundwater is suitable for either drinking or irrigation. Therefore, it recommends to plant crop varieties that are highly salinity tolerant, as treating the water prior to irrigation would not be economically viable, and it also recommends further exploration to make the available 50% of groundwater drinkable and to make the shallow groundwater fit for irrigation.

Deterioration of surface water quality in various parts of India due to increasing urbanization has led to the extensive usage of groundwater for various domestic and irrigation needs, thereby raising concerns over its quality. However, there are very few studies focussing over the issue of groundwater quality in North-Eastern region of India. In order to make an assessment of the quality of groundwater for drinking and irrigation purposes, this study was carried out in Shillong—the Capital City of Meghalaya State in North-East India during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons of 2018. Standard sampling and analytical procedures were followed for groundwater quality assessment. Minimal variation was observed in the water quality of pre- and post-monsoon seasons. However, the study found that groundwater samples are having acidic pH and presence of nitrate is also reported. Some of the samples also showed the presence of mercury, nickel, and cadmium. The presence of these contaminants could be attributed to the industrial activities in the state. Overall, the groundwater quality was found suitable for drinking and irrigation purposes after conventional treatment. Hydrochemical studies further inferred that groundwater properties in the region are influenced by the rock weathering along with the atmospheric precipitation.

The river is a vital component of the water ecosystem in both urban and rural regions. However, its rapidly increasing pollutants are posing a severe threat for water ecosystem security. Using Multivariate statistical technique and Integrated water quality index model (IWQI) to evaluate surface water quality and its spatial distribution based on Geographic information system (GIS). This combinatorial model have been proved to be a feasible tool for evaluating surface water quality at large-scale basin. This study analyzed the spatio-temporal variations of surface water quality, which were determined monthly from samples collected in the Maozhou River Basin Guangdong Province, China from 2018 to 2020. The results demonstrated that the surface water quality status of in the Maozhou River Basin has been steadily improved during the study period. The surface water quality of 82.17% of monitoring site reached the water quality target of function zones (surface water quality of the class V standards), with the IWQI values ranging from 12.118 to 3.650. By the end of 2019, black-odorous water in Maozhou River basin has disappeared from our sight. By 2020, the water quality status of the Maozhou River Basin has been steadily maintained at “Medium and good” level, and the main background pollutants for the water quality target of function zones is NH3-N. However, the some area in which the surface water quality still need to further improve is estuary and southwest tributary in the basin. This finding calls for further efforts to improve surface water quality and to properly deal with various sources of pollution in the watershed. It is concluded that this combined surface water quality evaluation model is more efficient and reasonable for surface water quality evaluation at a larger scale. It can provide scientific foundation for the water ecosystem management and planning in efficiently managing and evaluating surface water quality at river or basin scales.
