Comprehensive Treatments for Congenitally Missing Teeth and Generalized Diastema

Abstract: Congenitally missing teeth and/or hypodontia is a prevalent dental anomaly. There are different treatment options available for these conditions such as space maintenance, restoring the space by resin-bonded-fixed-partial-dentures (RBFPDs), and dental implants. This study addresses the comprehensive treatments for congenitally missing tooth and diastema using interdisciplinary approaches. One patient was treated with small-diameter-implants and the other one was treated using an intraoral scanner to make digit… Show more

“…When extraction of the primary teeth is indicated, orthodontic treatment should be performed to prevent migration of the adjacent and antagonist teeth and to allow for adequate space for prosthetic rehabilitation. 13 , 14 Prosthetic treatment options include treatment with implants or other conventional partial fixed dentures. The treatment with dental implants may be the best option for patients with hypodontia because this procedure is predictable, stable, and provides excellent aesthetic results.…”

“…The treatment with dental implants may be the best option for patients with hypodontia because this procedure is predictable, stable, and provides excellent aesthetic results. 14 Other treatment options, such as conventional partial fixed dentures, may cause biological damage due to the need to reduce the intact tooth structure; in young patients, the risk of pulp damage is high due to the large volume of the pulp chamber. When treatment with dental implants is indicated, the possible postpubertal vertical growth of the facial skeleton should be considered, and consecutive cephalometric analyzes should be performed to establish the period of growth.…”

“…Moreover, it should be borne in mind that shorter and narrower size implants may suffice in hypodontia patients during the planning phase to prosthetically replace the congenitally missing teeth following the orthodontic treatment. 30,31 This is especially so, as patients with hypodontia were also reported to have smaller clinical crowns of the remaining dentition when compared with controls, 8 and inadequate bone to house the standard-sized implants. 23,32 The findings of our study should be interpreted with some caution due to some limitations as is often the case with the majority of studies.…”
