Flowrate and distribution of air is a critical design factor in the cooling, refrigeration and drying of horticultural food products. These operations rely on a constant supply of air distributed throughout bulk arrangements of the produce. Local distribution of the air is critical to optimizing the design and efficiency of these processes. Identification of the key parameters affecting the airflow distribution has been done either experimentally (using intrusive point-wise or bulk measurement techniques) or numerically. The detailed information provided by the use of computational fluid dynamic models has facilitated unique opportunities to investigate alternative system designs, without the need for expensive and time consuming experiments. This study provides a review of the techniques available to measure airflow (thermal and rotatory vane anemometry, pressure differential devices, tracer gases, LDA and PIV). Their advantages and disadvantages (accuracy, resolution, application range, cost, and ease of use) as well as their application in the validation of numerical models are reviewed. The novel and scientifically based design guidelines developed by a better understanding of the airflow behaviour within the system for each of the operations under study are also presented.

The purpose of this research is to present a warm air infiltration simulation for a cold room, considering the effects of an air curtain. At present, there exist a large number of retail businesses, operating within an industry entailing high investment and competition. Therefore, retail operators must distinguish factors that are essential to lowering their costs, one of which is energy reduction. A survey of energy consumption in stores found that most used energy is due to the cooling system. Therefore, we tested the protection of cold rooms against air inflow by conducting three simulations: 1. Without an air curtain; 2. using an air curtain having a common grille; and 3. using an air curtain with a honeycomb grille. The cold room temperature was set to 1 °C, the cold room door was 200 × 100 m2, and the air curtain was installed 5 cm above the cold room door; furthermore, the velocity of air emitted from the air curtain was 6.5 m/s. Warm air infiltration simulations were carried out using SolidWorks Flow Simulation software, in order to determine the temperature change in the cold room and the airflow direction. From the results of the comparative experiments, when using the different wind grilles, there were differences in the infiltration of warm air. The honeycomb grille reduced air turbulence in the cold room more effectively than the common grille. As a result, the temperature in the cold room was consistent, and the temperature inside the cold room was maintained 10.62% lower when using a honeycomb grille compared to a common grille.

In order to study the relation between the food package temperature and ambient environment, the food package temperature is investigated by numerical simulation under the different conditions, such as evaporator outlet velocities, ambient temperatures, and relative humidity. In the present computation, the influence of mass transfer and radiation is considered. The computational results show that the front and top food package temperature rises to 0.1 ∼ 1.2 ∘ C due to the effect of light. At the investigated range of this paper, the food package temperature decreases when the air curtain velocity increases, but the food package temperature also increases with increase of ambient temperature and humidity. At the same time, the food package temperature decreases 0.2 ∼ 1.1 ∘ C when air curtain outlet velocity increased by 0.15 m/s. The food package temperature rises about 0.6 ∘ C when ambient temperature increases by 2 ∘ C. The food package temperature rises about 0.9 ∘ C when ambient humidity increases by 20%. Therefore, the study can provide the reference for the design of refrigerated display cabinet.
