Comprehensive situation awareness in a very large power grid control center

Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive security monitoring and warning system implemented at North China Grid, which has significantly improved the operator's situation awareness to operate a very large power grid by applying innovative visualization technology to power system analytical applications. It is concluded that visualization is not just about building better graphical displays; instead, visualization is becoming a driving force for emerging power system applications and future system integration.

“…Although some schemes have been proposed for the situational awareness for smart grid, these works cannot address above challenges. For example, the work in [18] presented a comprehensive security monitoring and warning system implemented on the North China Grid. Although the scheme has significantly enhanced the operator's situational awareness for operating a very large power grid, it was proposed specifically for the power grid control center, and cannot cover highaly complex and smart behaviors of the entire grid.…”
