Comprehensive Simulation Framework for Power System Operation

Abstract

In the previous chapters, newly designed applications from the field of Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) systems have been introduced and results have been presented for individual applications. However, it is of particular importance to evaluate these applications in interaction in order to analyze their joint performance and their interdependencies. Furthermore, power systems become more and more dependent on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for information exchange and data processing at local (intrasubstation) and remote (inter-substation/control center) levels. Especially timecritical WAMPAC applications require powerful and reliable ICT systems. Consequently, the real-time performance of these applications needs to be evaluated in detail taking into account the ICT system. Simulations are a common way for analyzing the suitability of new approaches for power and ICT systems, but as both networks are highly interdependent and mutual effects can occur, simulations need to address two aspects comprehensively: electromechanical effects modeled within a power systems simulation and communicative effects modeled within a communication networks simulator.In this chapter, we present a hybrid simulation architecture that enables the comprehensive analysis of the interplay of monitoring, protection and control applications taking into account both power and ICT systems. The co-simulation framework is based on the IEEE 1516-High-Level Architecture (HLA) and is currently under development in DFG research unit FOR1511.
