Comprehensive review on small common bile duct stones

Abstract: Common bile duct stones are among the most common conditions encountered by endoscopists. Therefore, it is well researched; however, some items, such as indications for endoscopic papillary balloon dilatation (EPBD), safety of EPBD and endoscopic sphincterotomy in patients receiving dual antiplatelet therapy or direct oral anticoagulant, selection strategy for retrieval balloons and baskets, lack adequate evidence. Therefore, the guidelines have been updated with new research, while others remain unchanged due… Show more

“…In general, laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is considered as the preferred method for treating benign gallbladder diseases because of its advantages of short operation time, minimal trauma, and rapid postoperative recovery[ 5 ]. In addition, LC combined with endoscopic papillary balloon dilation (EPBD) and LC combined with endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) have been widely used to treat GS combined with CBDS[ 6 ]. The application of EPBD has been reported to result in a decreased occurrence of recurrent cholecystitis, cholangitis, and bile duct stones when compared to EST[ 7 ].…”

“…Currently, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is widely considered as an effective treatment approach for CBDS. However, it is also a high-risk procedure accompanied due to the risk of several complications, such as post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP), short- or long-term cholecystitis and recurrence of CBDS ( 5 ), which can be fatal in severe cases ( 6 ). The incidence of PEP is estimated to be 1-40% ( 7 ), but understanding into its pathogenesis and risk factors remains limited.…”
