Satisfying energy demand has become a global problem that is on the rise due to population growth, infrastructure deterioration, a decline in fossil fuel sources, and high costs for investment, among others. Smart grids, in addition to those challenges that they have at the level of energy generation, have other management challenges derived from the great diversity of components that make them up, such as energy storage systems (batteries, capacitors, etc.), the different types of consumers (controllable, noncontrollable loads) and prosumers (electric vehicles, self-sustaining buildings, micro-grid, etc.), among others. Consequently, a distributed control problem is presented, mainly oriented to the coordination of its components. A possible solution is to achieve the participation of each component when conditions are more favorable, such as prioritizing production with renewable energy sources, or taking advantage of prosumers so that they can meet local demand, among other things. Therefore, new strategies with a distributed approach such as bio-inspired emergent controls are necessary. The objective of this work is the specification of an emergent control approach to coordinate a smart grid. This approach allows the coordination of the energy supply in various operating scenarios. The results obtained demonstrate a perfect synchronization between the different smart grid components (agents), prioritizing renewable energy sources, regardless of the operational context (for example, in cases of failures, unsuitable environmental conditions, etc.).

The conventional electrical grid is undergoing substantial growth for reliable grid operation and for more efficient and sustainable energy use. The traditional grid is now metamorphosing into a smart grid (SG) that incorporates a diverse, heterogeneous blend of operating measures such as smart appliances, meters, and renewable energy resources. With better efficient results and dependability, the SG can be described as a modern electric power grid architecture. The SG is one of the greatest potential advances as a promising solution for the energy crisis. However, it is complex and its decentralization could be of tremendous benefit. Moreover, digitalization and integration of a large number of growing connections make it a target of cyber-attacks. In this sense, blockchain is a promising SG paradigm solution that offers several excellent features. There has been considerable effort put into using blockchains in the smart grid for its decentralization and enhanced cybersecurity; however, it has not been thoroughly studied in both application and architectural perspectives. An in-depth study was conducted on blockchain-enabled SG applications. Blockchain architectures for various applications, such as the synchrophasor applications, electric vehicles, energy management systems, etc., were proposed. The purpose of this article is to provide directions for future research efforts aimed at secure and decentralized SG applications using blockchain.

The world is rapidly integrating renewable energy resources into the existing grid systems. However, the unpredictable nature of renewables and uncertain load profiles cause issues such as poor power quality, lower system reliability, complex power management, battery degradation, high operating costs, and lower efficiency. Microgrids can help smart grid technology overcome several problems associated with renewable energy integration. Distant locations can obtain electricity without building extensive transmission infrastructure, cutting development costs, or transmission losses. The intermittent nature of renewable energy sources contributes to microgrid problems such as poor power quality, decreased reliability, and high operating costs. Model predictive control (MPC) is an effective method to address challenging industrial and scientific issues. Advancements in MPC that accept different system constraints have solved multiple concerns in uncertain microgrid systems. MPC applied to three hierarchal control layers in a microgrid resolves the problems of power quality, power sharing, energy management, and economic optimization. This study demonstrates that MPC microgrid control is suitable for low-cost operation, improved management, and reliable control. The shortcomings of recent model predictive control techniques for microgrids are reviewed, and future research directions for MPC microgrids are identified.INDEX TERMS Microgrids, renewable energy resources, model predictive control, power quality enhancement, energy management system, hybrid energy storage system, demand side management, demand response, distributed systems
