Comprehensive Review of Sealant Materials for Leakage Remediation Technology in Geological CO2 Capture and Storage Process

Abstract: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology has been widely investigated to decrease the greenhouse effect. Geological CO2 storage sites are targeted mainly on depleted petroleum reservoirs or deep saline aquifers. However, CO2 leakage might take place through wellbores, cap rocks, reservoir fractures, or faults during or after the process of CO2 storage leading to environmental problems. To minimize these hazards, different kinds of sealants have been developed and applied. This review aims to summarize those… Show more

“…It weakens the electrostatic repulsion between guar gum and guar gum molecules and thus leads to the decrease in viscosity. 37,44 When the amount of NaCl is further increased, the viscosity of guar gum solution will increase. It is mainly because with the further increase in electrolyte concentration, the molecular chains of guar gum will curl up.…”

“…This is mainly because NaCl is a strong electrolyte, ionizing Na + in the aqueous solution can have an electric neutralization reaction with the negative groups (such as the ether bond −O−) on the surface of guar gum. It weakens the electrostatic repulsion between guar gum and guar gum molecules and thus leads to the decrease in viscosity. , When the amount of NaCl is further increased, the viscosity of guar gum solution will increase. “…Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sequestering in deep saline aquifers is considered to be an effective way to mitigate climate change, with great storage potential [1][2][3][4][5]. Before the injection of CO 2 into deep saline aquifers, it is quite important to screen potential reservoirs and validate the injection strategy through large-scale numerical simulation.…”

“…Carbon capture and storage (CCS) in underground geological media is among the most promising strategies to address the concerns related to global warming, as suggested by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Oil and gas reservoirs, deep saline aquifers, and unmineable coal seams are favorable geological sites for short- and long-term carbon storage. The trapping mechanisms for underground carbon storage include structural, dissolution, mineral, and residual trapping (see Figure ). These phenomena can be modeled through laboratory-based mathematical models. …”
