Comprehensive performance evaluation of stormwater management measures for sponge city construction: A case study in Gui'an New District, China

Abstract: Climate change and rapid urbanization have increased pressure on drainage systems, posing new challenges to preventing and controlling urban waterlogging. In 2013, China proposed the Sponge City, a strategic measure for urban waterlogging control. This study quantifies the effects of stormwater management measures in runoff reduction for different levels of rainfall and conducts a one-dimensional visual analysis of urban waterlogging risks. At the same time, the best cost-effective scheme is determined based o… Show more

“…The water depth of the P2 outlet exceeded that before the reconstruction because the diameter of the P2 pipe was improved during the reconstruction. It can be seen from the water depth reduction results that after sponge reconstruction, the water depth reduction effect at the outlet of the four subcatchment areas of the residential community was significant, and the full pipe duration for each return period was shortened, which was similar with the results of case study in Gui'an New District [34]. The full pipe duration at the outlet of P1 was reduced by 30-130 min, and the full pipe duration at the outlet of P3 was reduced by 35-135 min.…”

“…Many documents also assessed pervious pavements within the GI [27,[56][57][58][59], from which pervious pavements usually present an intermediary cost per square meter among the alternatives. Usually, pervious pavements are good performers in runoff reduction and are more expensive than natural alternatives, such as bioretention and swales.…”

“…Based on the selected documents, 28 analysed pervious pavements made with asphalt, 33 analysed pavements made with concrete (using Portland cement) and 7 compared asphalts with concrete. In some of the studies, the authors did not mention the material used on the surface [52,54,58,62]. Significant differences exist between the material types, including lifespan, permeability, maintenance, construction, and maintenance costs.…”
