Comprehensive overview of COVID-19-related respiratory failure: focus on cellular interactions

Abstract: The pandemic outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has created health challenges in all parts of the world. Understanding the entry mechanism of this virus into host cells is essential for effective treatment of COVID-19 disease. This virus can bind to various cell surface molecules or receptors, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), to gain cell entry. Respiratory failure and pulmonary edema are the most important causes of mortality from COVID-19 infections. Cytokines, especially proinfla… Show more

“…Appropriate neutrophil apoptosis is important for the resolution of inflammation (Driss and Filep, 2010). Platelets have a variety of transmembrane receptors, including TLRs and TNF receptors, which might be associated with the regulation of immune responses (Zamani-Rarani et al, 2022). During COVID-19, platelets play an important role in the host's antiviral responses (Trugilho et al, 2022).…”

“…SARS-CoV-2 is generally spread when aerosolized droplets from an infected person come into contact with a healthy person’s mucous membranes (i.e., the eyes, nose, or mouth) or through direct physical contact between an infected and uninfected person [ 4 ]. Some infected patients may present as asymptomatic [ 5 ], while other cases involve fever, cough, and unexplained fatigue [ 6 , 7 ]; more severe cases can result in hospitalization for respiratory failure [ 7 ], heart failure [ 8 ], or sepsis [ 9 ]. Since SARS-CoV-2 is capable of rapid transmission, and has proven to result in drastic health consequences, there is a pressing need for effective surveillance testing.…”
