Comprehensive Health Status Assessment of Centenarians: Results From the 1999 Large Health Survey of Veteran Enrollees

Abstract: Centenarian veteran enrollees are a group with a low number of age-associated diseases and good mental health despite substantial physical limitations. These results support future studies of services directed toward improvement of function as opposed to those focused solely on the treatment of diseases.

“…Poon and colleagues (1992) discovered that the common characteristics of the members of the Georgia centenarians sample were optimism and flexibility, which are associated with psychological resilience (Riolli et al, 2002). Selim and colleagues (2005) reported that U.S. centenarian veterans were psychologically resilient despite poor physical health. Jopp and Rott (2006) also demonstrated that psychological resilience was well preserved at the very end of the life span in the Heidelberg Centenarian Study.…”

“…To date, there are many studies which focus on the healthy status of centenarians, but most of them focused in a specific area of gerontological epidemiology, such as mental [8], cognitive [9,10], clinical [6,11], and physical [6,12] epidemiology. Very few studies actually investigate the trace element nutrition status of centenarians.…”

“…Knowledge of critical factors affecting everyday functioning can permit development of effective interventions which capitalize on or enhance retained abilities, facilitating recovery, maintenance, or improvement of functional capacity (e.g., Fortinsky, Covinsky, Palmer, & Landefeld, 1999). Earlier research with centenarians has often been limited to small sample sizes or subsets of the population such as those with intact cognition or male veterans (e.g., Evert et al, 2003; Gondo et al, 2006; Holtsberg et al, 1995; Selim et al, 2005; Silver et al, 2001). Consequently, we present normative data for cognitive and physical performance measures gathered in the Georgia Centenarian Study in order to expand the age groups for which norms on neuropsychological test scores, functional abilities, and disease comorbidities are available.…”
