Comprehensive Evaluation of Carbon Emissions for the Development of High-Rise Residential Building

Abstract: Despite the fact that many novel initiatives have been put forward to reduce the carbon emissions of buildings, there is still a lack of comprehensive investigation in analyzing a buildings’ life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially in high-density cities. In addition, no studies have made attempt to evaluate GHG emissions by considering the whole life cycle of buildings in Hong Kong. Knowledge of localized emission at different stages is critical, as the emission varies greatly in different region… Show more

“…Sustainable or renewable energy sources only account for 6% of the total energy used in the sector, while fossil fuel used in construction activities accounts for 40% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. Although numerous novel methods have been proposed to lessen the CO 2 footprint of buildings, particularly in high-density urban communities, the challenge has yet to be solved appreciably [14].…”

“…For example, Hong Kong has analyzed the life cycle of buildings under its jurisdiction. Their focus is to decrease energy usage by 25% from the 2005 level by 2030 [14]. The life cycle assessment can distinguish the life cycles of the structure from the operation of the building [15].…”

“…Thus, the amounts of GHG were measured using the methodology suggested by Yim et al [52], based on EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) equations [53]. First, emissions associated with construction materials were calculated and then material transport emissions, according to Equations (7) and (8), respectively:…”

“…In recent years, according to Hossain and Ng [1], the importance of implementing sustainability in civil construction has been noted. Therefore, selecting materials of low impact, managing waste materials and reducing wastages in sustainable construction works are gaining more and more space in the market and in decision making, in order to develop strategies and thereby to transform operations of traditional activities into sustainable activities [2][3][4][5].…”
