Comprehensive Case Study on the Ecologically Sustainable Design of Urban Parks Based on the Sponge City Concept in the Yangtze River Delta Region of China

Abstract: Owing to widespread urbanization, previously elastic and permeable ecological foundations are being continuously hardened, sealed, and channelized, leading to problems such as intensified urban convergence, water pollution, seasonal rain, and flood disasters. Urban parks and large green spaces, as rare large, cavernous bodies in cities, can effectively address the abovementioned urbanization problems. This study holistically analyzed and discussed the current developments in the sponge city concept using sever… Show more

“…China lags behind Japan in the application of Eco-DRR, with most research on Eco-DRR related to flooding focusing on sponge cities rather than other ecosystem disaster prevention strategies. The primary focus has been on utilizing engineering, environmental, and social indicators to evaluate sponge cities' resilience to flood impacts, as well as optimization models to identify the optimal arrangement of grey-green infrastructure [12,13] .…”

“…The core idea of sponge city is to improve urban water environment and ecological environment through diversified water resources management, natural ecological restoration and urban greening. In sponge city, a series of measures are taken to realize the collection, storage and utilization of rainwater [3]. For example, by building rainwater gardens, green roofs, rainwater collection systems and underground water storage facilities, rainwater will be led to underground storage and used when necessary, such as irrigation, toilet flushing and fire-fighting.…”
