Compound-Specific Carbon Isotopic Analysis of Aroclors, Clophens, Kaneclors, and Phenoclors

Abstract: Advances in instrumentation have allowed the measure ment of the isotopic composition of 13C/12C (δ13C) in the effluent of a gas chromatograph for each individual peak; this technique is called compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA). CSIA has been used in a variety of biogeochemical studies to determine the sources of hydrocarbons. We have utilized the technique of CSIA to examine δ13C of the individual congeners in the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) mixtures Aroclor 1242 and 1254; Clophen A30, A50, and T24… Show more

“…This result is consistent with the report on stable carbon isotope analysis of PBDE published by Rosenfelder et al (2011). A similar observation was found for stable carbon isotopic compositions of PCBs (Jarman et al, 1998). This phenomenon is related to the process of PBDE synthesis and is due to the kinetic isotope effect.…”

“…Similar to the studies by Jarman et al (1998) and Yanik et al (2003), a trend of isotope depletion with increasing chlorine content was observed. For most PCB congeners in the carp samples, including PCBs 22,28/31,44,52,66,70,and 74, there is some isotope agreement with the PCBs in the spiked food, as shown in Fig.…”

“…On the contrary very recently PCBs became objectives of isotopic studies in order to discriminate different technical sources or to monitor microbial degradation processes (e.g. Jarman et al 1998;Yanik et al 2003a).…”

“…Therefore isotopic characterization especially of technical mixtures of chlorinated aromatics were carried out (e.g. Jarman et al, 1998;Yanik et al, 2003b). ‡ Mainly adapted/reprinted from Schwarzbauer et al 2005b All of these isotopic studies were performed on systems with elevated contamination levels or high concentrations measured and mostly on simple compound mixtures.…”
