“…phospholipids associated with the lipovitellins, and the non-polar lipids, i.e. triacyglycerols, wax esters or cholesteryl esters, of the oil globules (Nakagawa and Tsuchiya 1971;Léger et al 1981;Brind et al 1982;Eldridge et al 1983;Moodie et al 1989). These lipids are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids of the (n-3) series, crucial for embryonic and larval development (Henderson and Tocher 1987;Silversand et al 1996;Wiegand 1996).…”

“…Rather, lipid extracts have been prepared from whole ovaries, ovulated eggs or embryos. Because lipoprotein yolk in species possessing discrete oil droplets also contains neutral lipid (L~ger et al, 1981;Brind et al, 1982;Eldridge et al, 1983;Ando and Hatano, 1991), this approach reduces the precision of knowledge concerning the compartmentalization of the various neutral lipid classes in the different yolk components. Many studies have also been performed using ovaries sampled during recrudescence rather than ovulated eggs.…”

“…In striped bass, wax and steryl ester made up 90% of the egg oil (Eldridge et al, 1983). TAG was found to be the major neutral lipid in the oils from oocytes of four species of Oncorhynchus (Lrger et al, 1981;Ando and Hatano, 1991) and that of the embryos of an annual East African fish (Nothobranchius guentheri, Aplocheilidae) (Brind et al, 1982). In the walleye, the oil contains both TAG (55%) and steryl and wax esters (Moodie et al, 1989).…”

“…Embryos lacking oil droplets from an early stage of development developed normally to fry. These results might suggest that the embryo does not require the indispensable materials from the oil droplets for development, although it has been postulated that oil droplets store nutrient substances of high caloric value (Kryzhanovskii 1960;Brind et al 1982) and vitamin A (carotin) (Kunz 1964). On the other hand, if liquid paraffin containing steroid (Hishida 1964) and various oils (Takeuchi 1965) are injected into the ooplasm of developing Oryzias eggs, these oils are absorbed, but do not interfere with development.…”
