Composition of the Essential Oil of Bidens tripartita L. Roots and Its Antibacterial and Antifungal Activities

Abstract: The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the roots of Bidens tripartita L. by hydrodistillation was investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In total, 106 compounds were identified (97.1% of the total oil). The main components of the oil were α-pinene (15.0%), β-bisabolene (9.3%), p-cymene (6.0%), hexanal (5.7%), linalool (4.6%), p-cymene-9-ol (3.4%), β-elemene (2.6%), 2-pentylfuran (2.2%), and silphiperfol-6-ene (2.1%). The antibacterial and antifungal properties of the essenti… Show more

“…Previous phytochemical studies on this plant have proved the occurrence of flavonoids, polysaccharides, carotenoids, amines, lactones, mineral elements, coumarins, and volatile oil. These compounds were used because of its antioxidant potential (Chiang et al 2004;Tomczykowa et al 2011). The plant composition and antioxidant activities of the Genus Bidens were assayed in Japan, Poland, Taiwan , and as a traditional medicine to prevent inflammation and cancer (Deba et al 2008;Tomczykowa et al 2011).…”

“…Nineteen Bidens species are estimated to exist in Brazil, and at least six are endemic to the Cerrado biome . The biological properties of essential oils from some Bidens have been investigated, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, and cytotoxic activities . The essential oils from B pilosa , B frondosa, and B tripartite have been tested as natural preservatives, intended to extend the shelf life of certain food products …”
