Composition of Petri nets models in service-oriented industrial automation

Abstract: -In service-oriented systems, composition of services is required to build new, distributed and more complex services, based on the logic behavior of individual ones. This paper discusses the formal composition of Petri nets models used for the process description and control in service-oriented automation systems. The proposed approach considers two forms for the composition of services, notably the offline composition, applied during the design phase, and the online composition, related to the synchronizatio… Show more

“…Service interaction patterns define recurring interaction patterns among services but, differently from Workflow Patterns, they are informally specified and therefore not employable in this work. Variants of Petri nets have been used for system modelling [19] and static analysis [20]. Finally WPI used WPs as a tool to evaluate the expressive power of business process languages, in particular for the cases of BPEL [21] and BPML [22].…”

“…PetriDotNet also supports efficient CTL model checking of P/T nets with the saturation algorithm (Section 3.4), as demonstrated in the railway interlocking case study (Section 4.5). Mendes et al described services of a service-oriented architecture with Petri nets and proposed formal composition techniques to model more complex services [71]. Their experiment on a flexible transport system revealed that modelling the individual components could be done before specifying the control layout.…”

“…This is more common in service wiring approaches (e.g., Promela [43] and ASM [44]) because the composition can be developed in different types of languages, as long as they consider the structure of the wiring model (i.e., ports and wires). Some approaches also focus on service-oriented automation systems (e.g., Petri nets [45]). Few approaches use FDTs that represent coordination (e.g., FSP [46] [47]) and orchestration languages (e.g., Petri net [48]).…”
