Composition of organic matter in particle‐size fractions of an agricultural soil

Abstract: The composition of organic matter was studied in clay (< 2 pm), fine silt (2-6.3 pm), medium silt (6.3-20 pm), coarse silt (2G63 pm) and sand (63-2000 pm) fractions of the Ap-horizon of a clay loam (Orthic Humic Gleysol) from Bainsville (Ottawa, Canada) by organic C and total N analyses and pyrolysis-field ionization mass spectrometryThe C and N contents were largest in fine silt and medium silt and smaller in coarse silt and sand. Differences in the contents of organic matter and absorbed water were significa… Show more

“…Silt content is more strongly correlated with SOM than clay content. This broadly accords with findings in Canadian Gleysols (Schulten et al, 1993). Furthermore, both fine and medium silt fractions have stronger correlations than the clay and coarse silt size fractions.…”

“…Mass spectrometric analyses of sandassociated organic carbon have revealed that this fraction is almost identical biochemically to recent plant residues, 64 and the labile nature of this carbon pool has been well documented. 24,41,54,58,65 Detailed sampling of surficial (0-10 cm) soils revealed that the isotopic composition of soil organic carbon in grove-dominated portions of the landscape was highly correlated with stand age estimated from counts of annual growth rings in Prosopis glandulosa.…”

“…A relação C/N das frações pesadas foi menor que a das frações leves e tendeu a diminuir com a redução do tamanho da partícula mineral associada, conforme observado por Christensen (1992), Schulten et al (1993) e Feller & Beare (1997.…”
