Edible honeysuckle (honeyberry) Lonicera caerulea is becoming popular as a novel berry crop with several useful features such as early fruit ripening and exceptional hardiness, particularly resistance to pests and diseases as well as severe frosts in winter and droughts in summer. The triterpenoid profile of fruit and leaf cuticular waxes of edible honeysuckle (a Russian cultivar Chernichka) was analyzed by GC-MS. The major compounds identified were the tetracyclic triterpenoids campesterol, cholesterol, cycloartanol, cycloart-23-ene-3,25-diol, 24-methylenecycloartanol (only in leaves), sitosterol, stigmasta-3,5-dien-7-one, and stigmasterol; and the pentacyclic triterpenes: α-amyrin, β-amyrin, hop-22(29)-en-3-one, oleanolic acid, and ursolic acid. Several remarkable features of the analyzed triterpenoid contents were revealed, including the relatively low abundance of triterpenoids in fruit waxes (6.5% of wax extract) compared to leaf waxes (22%), and a particularly high proportion of tetracyclic triterpenoids (tetracyclic to pentacyclic compound ratios of 4:1 in fruits and almost 7:1 in leaves). These rare features distinguish the triterpenoid profile of the cuticular waxes of L. caerulea var. kamtschatica from the majority of triterpenoid profiles in plant cuticular waxes investigated to date. To our knowledge, this is the first quantitative compositional study on triterpenoid compounds in the cuticular waxes of edible honeysuckle, supplementing the knowledge of cuticular triterpenoid diversity and distribution.

Instrumentation NMR spectra were recorded on a Jeol Ex-600 MHz NMR spectrometer, using TMS as internal standard. UV spectrometer (Schimadzu UV-240) and mass spectra EI-MS (Varian MAT at 70ev) were used. Column chromatography (CC) was carried out on silica gel F254 (Merck) in glass blades. TLC was performed with silica gel 60 GF254 plates (Merck, Darmstadt, Germany), ABSTRACT Introduction: The aim of this study is to isolate and identify sterols and terpenes from the chloroform/methanol extract (3:1) of aerial parts of Jacquemontia pentantha (Jacq.) and evaluation of cytotoxic activity of crude extract and phytol for the first time from this plant. Methods: Different chromatographic techniques for the aerial parts of Jacquemontia pentantha extract were used resulting in isolation of eight compounds. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including 1 HNMR, 13 CNMR, EI/MS spectrometry and by comparing their data with those reported in the literature. The cytotoxicity was evaluated using MTT assay. The mode of action of the extract was predicted by using Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay Kit for Tubulin beta (TUBb). Results: Eight compounds for the first time from this plant were identified as Palmitic acid (1), Phytol (major) (2), Stigmast-4-en-3-one (3), mixture of α-amyrin (4) and β-amyrin (5), 1,6,10,14,18,2,6,10,15,19, (6) and mixture of α-amyrin acetate (7) and β-amyrin acetate (8). The extract showed potent cytotoxic activity on MCF-7 breast carcinoma cell line as well as HCT-116 colon carcinoma cell line at different concentrations (100-6.25 ug/ml) with IC 50 (21.8 ± 0.9) and (40.9 ± 1.3) respectively. Phytol showed potent cytotoxic activity on MCF-7 cell line at different concentrations (100-12.5 ug/ml) with IC 50 (60 ± 2.4), while it had no cytotoxic effect on HCT-116 cell line. The extract showed significant TUBb polymerization inhibition activity. Conclusion: The extract of aerial parts of Jacquemontia pentantha (Jacq.) and also phytol compound has cytotoxic activity due to the presence of phytochemicals such as sterols and terpenes. Allagoptera arenaria (Arecaceae), commonly known as Bguriri,^is a palm that occurs only along the sandy coastal environments of Brazil. This work carries out a thorough analysis of A. arenaria leaf anatomy, including histochemistry and micromorphology, with special emphasis on leaf epicuticular waxes. Several common features of palms were identified, as well as characters not yet reported for the family or the species. Allagoptera arenaria pinnae possess a one-layered epidermis, hypodermis with two adaxial layers and one abaxial layer, homogeneous mesophyll composed of palisade cells, three different types of collateral veins, a prominent adaxial midrib, and silica inclusions. Although both margins of A. arenaria pinnae have a similar appearance, the shape of the leaf margins can vary. Scales or ramenta were found on the abaxial surface of the midrib on the median and basal portions of the pinnae. Histochemical analysis revealed the presence of polyphenols, flavonoids, lignin, and neutral and acidic lipids. The most distinctive character of A. arenaria pinnae is the presence of a thick layer of epicuticular waxes covering both the adaxial and abaxial surfaces. These results suggest the potential for exploiting A. arenaria as an alternative source of industrial waxes.
