Composition of cerebrospinal fluid in clinically normal adult ferrets

Abstract: We have established reference range values for WBC counts and protein concentrations in CSF from healthy adult ferrets that may be useful in the clinical investigation of CNS disease. Results of our study indicate that the WBC count is significantly affected by blood contamination of the CSF sample.

“…To avoid this effect, echogenic needles were developed but, unfortunately, they were not available in our institution during the study. Based on the fact that the puncture of the cisterna magna using a hypodermic needle was previously described in different mammal species, including the rabbit, and being a good visualization of the needle necessary during the procedure, the hypodermic needle was preferred to the spinal needle for the main part of the study. To the authors’ knowledge, no studies have been performed to investigate the difference in echogenicity and ultrasound visibility between spinal and hypodermic needles, but this was beyond the aim of our study.…”

“…10-3). 37 Some spinal lesions may be amenable to surgical resection or stabilization; many, however, carry a poor prognosis. Sites for CSF tap and myelography are the atlanto-occipital and the lumbar (L5-L6) regions.…”

“…Survey spinal radiographs revealed a mildly narrowed intervertebral disc space between the second and third lumbar vertebrae (Fig 1). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obtained from the cisterna magna revealed a cell count of 2 nucleated cells/μl (range, 0 to 8 nucleated cells/μl), containing mononuclear cells only (Platt and others 2004). Protein concentration in the CSF was not measured due to the small amount of fluid obtained.…”
