Composites of silane treated cellulosic fibers and high density polyethylene

Abstract: Silanes with different functional groups (vinyl, acryl and amino) were used to pretreat the wood fiber. Composites were made with high density polyethylene (HDPE) and silane pretreated wood fibers at various filler levels (0 to 40 wt.-Yo). The effects of silane treatment on fiber-matrix adhesion and fiber dispersion were studied. The characterization of fiber-matrix interaction was done by IR. The influence of silane concentration, filler content and the nature of wood fiber on mechanical properties (tensile a… Show more

“…The higher strength achieved with the NFC possibly might be explained by an expected higher aspect ratio, leading to an enhanced reinforcing ability. Raj and Kokta (1991) observed decreased composite strength with increasing size of reinforcements obtained from the same aspen wood chips. Chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) was made using a pressurized refining process, which is a commonly used process in the pulp and paper industry.…”

“…Such surface modifications of the wood fiber would improve the interfacial bond strength, which is a critical factor for obtaining better mechanical properties of composites [17]. The other alternative is to modify the plastic component in the WPC either by using blends with different plastic types or by using coupling agent which may be compatible with the hydrophobic plastic components and the hydrophilic wood or natural fiber component.…”

“…Different works have been devoted to thermoplastics/wood composites; in general, these composites are based on high density polyethylene (HDPE), [3][4][5][6][7][8] chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), poly(propylene) (PP), [9][10][11][12] polystyrene (PS) [5, 13 -15] and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). as filler in the reinforcement of polymeric matrices has been growing during the last decade.…”
