Composite Resin's Adhesive Resistance to Dentin: Influence of Er:YAG Laser Focal Distance Variation

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze in vitro the influence of Er:YAG laser focal distance variation on tensile bond strength of a composite resin to dentin. Although there are several studies using the Er:YAG laser for dentin treatment, there is a lack of available literature related to the Er:YAG laser focal distance variation. Sixty vestibular and lingual dentin surfaces from extracted human third molars, kept in a 0.4% azide sodium solution, were ground and assigned to six groups. The control group was con… Show more

“…The parameters 80 mJ of energy and 17 mm of irradiation distance were selected according to a previous research. 22 After laser irradiation in the experimental groups, dentin surfaces of all groups (including the unlased control group) were conditioned with 37% phosphoric acid (Cond Ac 37, FGM, Joinville, SC, Brasil) for 15 s, rinsed thoroughly for 20 s and the excess water was removed with absorbing paper. Two consecutive coats of Single Bond adhesive system (3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN) were applied with disposable tips (Microbrush, Orlando, FL); the remaining solvent was evaporated with a brief, mild air blast, and the adhesive was light cured with a visible light-curing unit (XL 3000; 3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN), with a light output not less than 450 mW/cm 2 for 10 s. The specimens were individually fixed in a metallic clamping device (developed at the Houston Biomaterials Research Center and manufactured at the Precision Workshop at Ribeirão Preto School of Dentistry of University of São Paulo, Brazil), keeping the dentin surface parallel to a flat base.…”
