ABSTRACT. The aim of this research was to evaluate vitreousness in commercial corn hybrids with flint and dent grains and to study the effect of this characteristic on agronomic behavior, nutritional value, and ruminal degradability of grains harvested in silage maturity. Twelve commercial corn hybrids were evaluated. They were divided in two groups (six with flint grains and six with dent grains). The experiments were conducted in two municipalities represented by Guarapuava and Laranjeiras do Sul, both in Paraná State. The harvest for the grain quality analysis was performed at ¾ of the milk line stage in the grain. The following characteristics were evaluated: grain yield, grain yield in silage maturity, vitreousness, ruminal digestibility of grain, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and crude protein. The grains in the group of dent hybrids exhibited better degradability associated with lower vitreousness than the group of flint hybrids. The group of dent hybrids exhibited better ruminal digestibility of the grains associated with lower vitreousness versus the group of flint hybrids. There is a negative correlation between vitreousness and the digestibility of the grain; thus, vitreousness can be a criterion for selecting genotypes for forage production.

Metabolizable energy of corn hybrids for broiler chickens at different ages

We determined the values of apparent metabolizable (AME), apparent corrected (AMEn), true (TME) and true corrected (TMEn) energy of six corn hybrids for broiler chickens in phases 1-7, 8-14, 15-21, 22-28, 29-35 and 36-42 day-old birds, using the substitution method (40%) of reference diet with the test ingredient. Ross-308 male chicks (1,134) were allotted to metabolism cages and the number of birds per experimental unit was adjusted to suit each bird's density stage in the cage, using six replicates. Simultaneously, birds continue to fast for the determination of metabolic and endogenous losses for each study phase. The birds received water and food ad libitum during the experimental period. The birds were maintained in metabolism cages for seven days, four days for adaptation to the cage and food, and three days for excreta collection. The corn energy values were significantly lower only in the pre-initial phase (1-7 days). Thus, broiler feed formulations of AMEn values for corn of 3563 kcal/kg DM for 1 to 7 days and 3778 kcal/kg DM from 7-day-old birds are recommended.The agronomic characteristics of the corn had no influence on the birds energy levels.Index terms: Energy content, flint corn, dent corn, semi-dent corn, soft corn. RESUMOForam determinados os valores de energia metabolizável aparente (EMA), aparente corrigida (EMAn), verdadeira (EMV) e verdadeira corrigida (EMVn) de seis milhos híbridos para frangos de corte nas fases de 1 a 7, 8 a 14, 15 a 21, 22 a 28, 29 a 35 e 36 a 42 dias de idade das aves, usando o método de substituição (40%) da ração referência pelo ingrediente em teste. Pintos machos Ross-308 (1.134) foram distribuídos em gaiolas de metabolismo, sendo o número de aves por parcela, ajustado em cada fase para adequação da densidade de aves na gaiola, sendo utilizadas 6 repetições por tratamento. Simultaneamente, foram mantidas aves em jejum para a determinação das perdas endógenas e metabólicas para cada fase do estudo. As aves receberam água e ração à vontade durante todo período experimental. As aves foram mantidas nas gaiolas de metabolismo durante sete dias, sendo quatro dias para adaptação à gaiola e à alimentação e três dias para a coleta de excretas. Os valores energéticos dos milhos foram significativamente inferiores somente na fase pré-inicial (1 a 7 dias) em relação às demais. Assim, recomenda-se usar nas formulações os valores de EMAn do milho de 3563/kg MS de 1 a 7 dias e de 3778 kcal/kg MS a partir 7 dias de idade das aves As características agronômicas dos milhos não influíram nos seus teores de energia.Termos para indexação: Conteúdo energético, milho duro, milho dentado, milho semi-dentado, milho mole.

ResumoO estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito de amilase e protease, adicionadas de forma individual ou combinadas (amilase + protease) sobre a digestibilidade de nutrientes em dietas para leitões contendo milho duro. Dezesseis leitões machos castrados e desmamados aos 25 dias foram alojados individualmente em gaiolas de metabolismo. Os animais foram distribuídos em quatro dietas por meio de delineamento change over balanceado com dois períodos. As dietas foram isonutritivas e diferiram apenas na adição de enzimas: 1) sem enzimas; 2) 0,06% de amilase; 3) 0,012% de protease; e 4) 0,06% de amilase e 0,012% de protease. Não foram observados efeitos (P>0,05) da adição individual ou combinada de amilase e protease nos coeficientes de digestibilidade (CD) dos nutrientes avaliados. Os CD médios foram de 87,9, 88,2, 85,3, 77,7, 97,3 e 90,9%, para a matéria seca, matéria orgânica, proteína bruta, matéria mineral, amido e energia bruta, respectivamente. Conclui-se que a adição de amilase e protease, individual ou combinada, não influencia a digestibilidade dos nutrientes de dietas para leitões contendo milho duro. Sixteen castrated piglets weaned at 25 days were individually penned in metabolic crates and distributed in four diets using a balanced two period changeover design. The experimental diets were isonutritive and supplemented with 0.06% of amylase and 0.012% of protease alone or in combination. The results showed the amylase or protease alone or in combinations had no influence (P>0.05) on coefficients of digestibility in none of the two periods studied. The average of coefficients of digestibility were 87.9, 88.2, 85.3, 77.7, 97.3, and 90.9% to dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ash, starch and gross energy, respectively. In conclusion, addition of amylase and protease alone or in combination have no influence on digestibility of piglets diets contend hard-endosperm corn.
