Beryllium is a material extensively used in various particle accelerator beam lines and target facilities, as beam windows and, to a lesser extent, as secondary particle production targets. With increasing beam intensities of future multimegawatt accelerator facilities, these components will have to withstand even greater thermal and mechanical loads during operation. As a result, it is critical to understand the beaminduced thermal shock limit of beryllium to help reliably operate these components without having to compromise particle production efficiency by limiting beam parameters. As part of the RaDIATE (radiation damage in accelerator target environments) Collaboration, an exploratory experiment to probe and investigate the thermomechanical response of several candidate beryllium grades was carried out at CERN's HiRadMat facility, a user facility capable of delivering very-high-intensity proton beams to test accelerator components. Multiple arrays of thin beryllium disks of varying thicknesses and grades, as well as thicker cylinders, were exposed to increasing beam intensities to help identify any thermal shock failure threshold. Real-time experimental measurements and postirradiation examination studies provided data to compare the response of the various beryllium grades, as well as benchmark a recently developed beryllium Johnson-Cook strength model.

Introducción: las permanentes descargas de efluentes sin tratamiento previo han aumentado de manera considerable en los últimos años propiciando la perdida de la calidad de los recursos hídricos lo que hace factible el desarrollo de sistemas de tratamiento de aguas para lo cual se utilizan productos químicos los cuales son dañinos para la salud por tal motivo se propone reemplazarlos en gran parte por agentes naturales derivados de productos vegetales que tengan un comportamiento similar o mejor a los mismos. Objetivo: Obtener un coagulante natural a partir de la hoja de Opuntia ficus indica (Tuna) mediante varias operaciones unitarias para el tratamiento de aguas residuales. Metodología: El coagulante natural descrito se obtiene a través de diferentes operaciones unitarias tales como: secado, molienda, tamizado y extracción sólido-líquido. Resultados: Se consiguieron muy buenos porcentajes de remoción como DQO 78,12 %, DBO5 58 %, Nitrógeno Total 89,06 %, Coliformes Fecales 100%, Coliformes Totales 100% y Turbidez 85,47 % evidenciando que el tratamiento es viable. Conclusión: Se comprobó que mediante la utilización de un coagulante natural extraído de la hoja de Opuntia ficus indica (tuna) se puede lograr porcentajes de remoción similares a los obtenidos por productos químicos convencionales atenuando considerablemente el nivel de contaminación en el producto final de dicho proceso. A Report on the Validation of Beryllium Strength Models

This report discusses work on validating beryllium strength models with flyer plate and Taylor rod experimental data. Strength models are calibrated with Hopkinson bar and quasi-static data. The Hopkinson bar data for beryllium provides strain rates up to about 4000 per second. A limitation of the Hopkinson bar data for beryllium is that it only provides information on strain up to about 0.15. The lack of high strain data at high strain rates makes it difficult to distinguish between various strength model settings. The PTW model has been calibrated many different times over the last 12 years. The lack of high strain data for high strain rates has resulted in these calibrated PTW models for beryllium exhibiting significantly different behavior when extrapolated to high strain. For beryllium, the α parameter of PTW has recently been calibrated to high precision shear modulus data. In the past the α value for beryllium was set based on expert judgment. The new α value for beryllium was used in a calibration of the beryllium PTW model by Sky Sjue. The calibration by Sjue used EOS table information to model the temperature dependence of the heat capacity. Also, the calibration by Sjue used EOS table information to model the density changes of the beryllium sample during the Hopkinson bar and quasi-static experiments. In this paper, the calibrated PTW model by Sjue is compared against experimental data and other strength models. The other strength models being considered are a PTW model calibrated by Shuh-Rong Chen and a Steinberg-Guinan type model by John Pedicini. The three strength models are used in a comparison against flyer plate and Taylor rod data. The results show that the Chen PTW model provides better agreement to this data. The Chen PTW model settings have been previously adjusted to provide a better fit to flyer plate data, whereas the Sjue PTW model has not been changed based on flyer plate data. However, the Sjue model provides a reasonable fit to flyer plate and Taylor rod data, and also gives a better match to recently analyzed Z-machine data which has a strain of about 0.35 and a strain rate of 3e5 s −1 .
