Buildings consume 40% of raw material and primary energy and generate 35% of industrial waste worldwide, making this sector play a main role in raw material depletion, energy consumption and carbon emissions which provoke great environmental impact and worsen Global Warming. Latin American countries including Mexico have the world’s highest urbanisation rate (84%) but lack effective construction and demolition waste (CDW) management to thrive in regenerative sustainability, climate change mitigation and post-pandemic economic recovery. This work applies the Spanish current model to quantify on-site 61 Mexican social housing CDW with surveys to workers and supervisors as an additional source of data. The results of the case study show that social housing consumes 1.24 t.m−2 of raw materials and produces 0.083 t.m−2 of CDW. Cement-based, ceramic and mixed CDW represent 83.44% of total CDW. When considering inert soil as a recyclable resource, 78% of the remaining CDW ends in landfills and only 22% of it goes to recycling plants. The implementation of this methodology will deliver sustainable CDW management in Mexico, by minimising CDW production, promoting related legislation and allowing replacement of current construction materials for eco-efficient ones. Furthermore, these data can broaden the Spanish coefficients of the construction resources that become CDW to build an internationally sourced database.

Flower cultivation has increased nationwide. Currently, species of the Dahlia genus (known colloquially as Dahlias) are grown for ornamental purposes, with central Mexico having the highest production rate. Due to its importance, we sought to evaluate the effect of three different methods of cultivation (shade net, greenhouse, and open field) on the growth and development of four dahlia varieties in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. The experiment was carried out at the Horticulture Department of the Universidad Autónoma Agraria Antonio Narro. Tuberous roots of four D. pinnata varieties were sown directly into the soil and covered with mulch. The shade netting production environment proved to be the best in production, with the best results in plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, and days to flowering. The highest-performing cultivar was the Antje variety. On the other hand, the Antje variety (cultivated under shade netting) had the longest flower stalks, the Boy Mick variety (cultivated in the greenhouse) had the heaviest flowers, and the Canby Centennial variety (cultivated in open field) had the flowers with the thickest stalks. The results show that Dahlias can be grown in northeastern Mexico because the area meets suitable conditions for crop development and production.

In this work, two case studies were analyzed; Case 1 and Case 2, both located in Malinalco, State of Mexico, to maintain the interior temperature of the architectural spaces within the range of the thermal comfort zone for users (Auliciems and Szokolay). A diagnosis was made by measuring the interior temperature with a datalogger. The thermal behavior was analyzed through the elaboration of a three-dimensional computer model of the architectural envelope according to its current conditions, as well as the different alternatives of bioclimatic strategies, such as indirect, direct and internal gains, which are based on the correct selection of materials and their thermal properties. The three-dimensional computer model was analyzed through two tools, Design Builder 6.0 and Revit with its insight 360 add-on, with the objective of determining whether the latter is as effective as Design Builder 6.0. The Urban Development Program (PPDU) for Malinalco proposes a series of bioclimatic recommendations for the architectural envelope and the composition of its materials to maintain a comfortable temperature for the users, with the analysis of the three-dimensional model it was verified if these are efficient for the proposed case studies. The results of the experimental investigation revealed that in the architectural envelope for opaque surfaces when using a mixture of masonry and insulating materials according to their orientation, while for transparent surfaces when using a material with a low U-value, there is a significant improvement. The evaluation of a mixed system in terms of materials (masonry and insulation) revealed that there is a greater than 87% improvement for days in the thermal comfort zone. The Insight 360 tool was found to be ineffective because it does not account for operating temperature in the same manner as the Design Builder and relies primarily on the ASHRAE 90.1 standard. In addition, the PPDU does not meet the objective of maintaining the indoor temperature in the thermal comfort zone.
