Components of Standing Postural Control Evaluated in Pediatric Balance Measures: A Scoping Review

Abstract: Assessing children's balance with valid and comprehensive measures is important for ensuring development of safe mobility and independence with functional tasks. Balance measures validated in pediatric populations to date do not comprehensively assess standing postural control and omit some key components for safe mobility and independence. Existing balance measures, that have been validated in adult populations and address some of the existing gaps in pediatric measures, warrant consideration for validation i… Show more

“…These devices could help the children born with BRF to attain a higher level of integration through the stimulation of tactile and balancing senses. Research shows that these special devices effectively improve balance and postural control [11,13,15,32,41,42,47,52,64]. Between five and six years, children seem to be learning how to integrate sensory information and how to calibrate sensory feedback in postural control [64].…”

“…trampolines, balance pads, seating discs, seesaws). Among the pieces of equipment the trampoline was mostly used as part of the intervention program [1,9,11,14,16,31,32,47,48]. These therapeutic devices are good to develop balancing ability, postural control, proprioception and coordination [1,20,42].…”

“…41 In a recent review of 21 tools used to assess balance in children, it was discovered that no assessments include all nine components, which suggests that some balance assessments are missing important components. 42 For example, reactive postural control is an important component of balance and a primary factor in fall prevention for children, but was not included in any balance assessment. 42,43 Balance is also an important component of injury prevention programs and has been integrated into many existing protocols.…”
