Solanum phureja is one of the most important crops for farmer economy in Colombia, and Phytophthora infestans is considered its main limiting disease. This pathogen is managed using chemical products, generating high production costs as well as environmental pollution. The use of resistant varieties is a strategy that is currently well positioned for the control of this disease, leaving the task of identifying superior parentals to plant breeders. Moreover, the analysis of general and specific combinatorial aptitudes of potential parental genotypes gains importance. The aim of this study was to establish the general and specific combinatorial aptitudes of five elite parental cultivars. For this, 979 clones were assessed. General combinatorial aptitude results show statistically significant differences for the Paola, Primavera and Ocarina parentals. On the other hand, the specific combinatorial analysis allowed concluding that the combinations Ocarina×Violeta and Primavera×Galeras contain non-additive effects involved in inheritance. Resumen Solanum phureja es uno de los cultivos más importantes en la economía campesina colombiana. Phytophthora infestans es considerada la principal enfermedad del cultivo. Se controla usando productos químicos, generando altos costos de producción y contaminación ambiental. El uso de variedades resistentes es una estrategia bien posicionada para el control de la enfermedad, dejando la tarea de identificar progenitores superiores a los fitomejoradores, recobrando importancia el análisis de la aptitud combinatoria general y específica de los genotipos potencialmente parentales. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la aptitud combinatoria general y específica de cinco parentales élite de S. phureja. Para esto, se evaluaron 979 clones. Los resultados de la aptitud combinatoria general muestran diferencias estadísticamente significativas para los progenitores Paola, Primavera y Ocarina. Por otro lado, el análisis de la aptitud combinatoria específica permitió concluir que las combinaciones Ocarina×Violeta y Primavera×Galeras contienen efectos no aditivos involucrados en la herencia. Para estimar los efectos de aptitud combinatoria general (ACG) y aptitud combinatoria específ ica (ACE), se evaluaron en campo 15 poblaciones progenitoras de la raza de maíz Chalqueño y sus 105 cruzamientos dialélicos bajo el diseño II de Griffing. La siembra se realizó durante el ciclo agrícola primavera-verano 2006 en Zotoluca y Mixquiahuala, Hidalgo y en Texcoco, Estado de México, bajo un diseño experimental látice 12 x 12 con tres repeticiones. Se analizaron ocho características, encontrándose diferencias altamente significativas (p≤ 0.01) entre localidades, grupos y poblaciones dentro de grupos para las variables rendimiento (REN), índice de grano (IG), mazorcas por planta (MP), diámetro de mazorca (DM), longitud de grano (LGr), número de hileras por mazorca (NH), días a floración masculina (DFM) y altura de planta (AP). En los efectos de ACG y ACE se observaron diferencias altamente significativas para las ocho variables consideradas, siendo mayor la variación de la ACG que la deACE.Al considerar los valores per se y efectos positivos deACG para las variables evaluadas, las poblaciones Gto-142, Col-03-64, Col-6784, FHCH-129Fn, Zac-66, Tlax- 151 y VS-22 presentaron la mejor expresión en el rendimiento, morfología y fenología; también se identif icaron cruzas con efectos de ACE altos para REN, IG, MP, DM, LGr, NHM, DFM y AP. Con base en los efectos registrados, se detectaron poblaciones sobresalientes, destacando por su potencial genético las de la raza Chalqueño, dando como resultado interacciones importantes entre las poblaciones progenitoras de diferente origen geográf ico, así como patrones heteróticos sobresalientes factibles de considerar para los programas de mejoramiento genético de maíz.
