Intercropping of maize and cowpea is widely used by Brazilian family farmers. The aim of this work is to compare the grain yield of two maize cultivars, and one cultivar of cowpea in organic system. Treatments of monoculture of cowpea (Poços de Caldas) and maize ('BR106' and 'AG1051') and intercropping were used. A randomized block design with four replicates in an area under conversion to organic production system was used. The experiment was conducted in the period of October 2012 to March 2013, corresponding to the periods of spring/summer. The maize alone was on average, 26.5 cm taller and grain yield was 28% higher than in the intercropping. The cowpea intercropped with maize 'AG 1051' was 3.8 cm taller than the intercropped with 'BR 106'. In monoculture, the cowpea presented more (0.7 and 1.2 grain per pod when intercropped with 'AG 1051' and 'BR 106', respectively). The cowpea monoculture resulted in 2.4 pods per plant than in intercropping and productivity was 5.4 times higher than that of the intercropping. The cowpea intercropped with 'BR 106' was efficient, while that with 'AG1051' was inefficient in terms of land equivalent coefficient.

RESUMO A qualidade fisiológica das sementes é um fator crucial no processo de produção, definindo o rendimento potencial dos cultivos. Tendo em vista a grande importância do feijão-caupi para a Região Nordeste do Brasil, bem como o fato das sementes crioulas serem mais comumente utilizadas pelos pequenos produtores, avaliou-se a viabilidade de sementes crioulas de cinco genótipos de feijão-caupi: Coruja; Rosinha; Sempre Verde; Cabeça de Gato; Paulistinha. As sementes foram adquiridas a partir de casas de sementes durante o ano de 2016 nas microrregiões da Chapada do Araripe, Barro, Cariri e Sertão de Senador Pompeu. As amostras foram submetidas aos testes de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação e condutividade elétrica, além de determinações do percentual de umidade e peso de mil sementes. As análises mostraram diferenças de desempenho fisiológico entre os genótipos. Os acessos Rosinha e Cabeça de Gato tiveram desempenho superior no teste de germinação, sem diferença significativa entre os genótipos pelo teste de Scott-Knott (p < 0,01). O genótipo Rosinha ainda apresentou desempenho superior aos demais genótipos quanto a condutividade elétrica (68 μS cm-1 g-1) e a velocidade de germinação das sementes (17.25 in 24 hours). Neste contexto, a utilização de outros parâmetros é fundamental na diferenciação de genótipos que possuam o mesmo valor germinativo, mas que podem diferir em vigor.

The application of nitrogen (N) at the appropriate time can be effective for crop productivity, changing the grain yield by increasing yield components. Thus, new alternatives that enable a better application of N fertilizer are sought. The aim of this study was to evaluate the components of yield and productivity of wheat cultivated with different doses of N sidedressing and molybdenum (Mo) via leaf application, using two cultivars, CD 150 and Quartzo. The experiment was conducted in the crop years of 2013 and 2014. The experiment used a randomized, factorial 4 x 4 block design, with four replicates. Four doses of N sidedressing in the form of urea were applied (0, 30, 60, and 90 kg ha -1 ) during tillering. In the same period, leaf molybdic fertilizer was applied, using four dosages of Mo in the form of potassium molybdate (0, 20, 40, and 60 g ha -1 ). Grain number per ear (GNPE), 1,000-grain mass (TGM), hectoliter weight (HW), and grain productivity (PROD) were evaluated. N fertilizer sidedressing did not promote the yield components of either of the wheat cultivars, although the GNPE of the Quartzo cultivar increased with increasing N doses in both crop years. The increase in N fertilizer increased the PROD of both wheat cultivars. The foliar application of Mo did not promote the yield components or wheat PROD of either cultivar. The HW was influenced by N and Mo rates, and was reduced in the absence of either of these fertilizer elements, indicating that the two nutrients were dependent on each other.
