Component Analysis of Behavior Skills Training in Functional Analysis

Abstract: Behavioral Skills Training (BST) is an effective training package that consists of instructions, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback. Although the efficacy of BST has been demonstrated, previous research has not clearly delineated its active components. This study used an alternating‐treatment design embedded within ABC and ABCD designs to evaluate the independent effects of all components of BST for training teachers to conduct functional analyses. Prior to baseline, teachers reviewed written instructions. Foll… Show more

“…Researchers have identified several effective methods for training clinicians with limited knowledge of behavior analysis or functional analysis methodology to implement functional analyses. To date, the staff training literature on functional analysis has used behavior skills training, which typically includes instructions, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback (e.g., Ward-Horner & Sturmey, 2012); video modeling (e.g., Moore & Fisher, 2007); instructional DVDs (Trahan & Worsdell, 2011) and workshop delivery (e.g., Wallace, Doney, Mintz-Resudek, & Tarbox, 2004) to train students, teachers, and residential staff with little behavior analytic knowledge to implement antecedents and consequences during conditions of a functional analysis.…”

“…Therefore, it would appear that the instruction and modelling components of the BST intervention played an important role in target skill development. Previously, feedback has been shown to be the most effective component of BST (Ward‐Horner and Sturmey ). However, findings from the current study support the position that training outcomes are optimised when all four components are used in combination (Barnes et al .…”

“…When performance technologists evaluate individual training strategies within an intervention package, they perform what psychologists call component analysis. Component analysis is an assessment of the independent variables or components that comprise an intervention package for the purpose of identifying their necessity and sufficiency (Ward‐Horner & Sturmey, , ). Importantly, component analysis requires a systems approach whereby each component is examined in interaction with others, rather than in isolation.…”
