Complications of Urologic Laparoscopic Surgery: A Single Institute Experience of 1017 Procedures

Abstract: We evaluated the complications of each procedure using the ESS for classification of technical difficulty. Based on the results of our retrospective study, nephrouretectomy should be upgraded as "very difficult" group according to the ESS. Appropriate grading by technical difficulty is beneficial for the prevention of complications from laparoscopic surgery.

“…Therefore, in this single center series with a relatively large number of surgeons performing operations via several approaches, the complication rate (1.6-5.8%) was not higher than that previously reported with a small number of surgeons (1.8-4.0%) [20,21]. In addition, our study appears Int Urol Nephrol (2011) 43:975-981 979 reliable because this is a relatively limited report analyzing the complication of laparoscopic adrenalectomy using standardized Clavien grading system except several reports [22,23]. The use of a standardized complication system is encouraged for a valuable quality assessment in the laparoscopic adrenalectomy among different centers.…”

“…Similarly, the outcome was not significantly different when considering the type of procedure (robotic vs laparoscopic) ( p = 0.13; OR: 1.6; 95% CI, 0.8-2.9). Operative time ( p = 0.01; OR: 0.99; 95% CI, 0.9-1.0) and estimated blood loss ( p = 0.03; OR: 0.99; 95% CI, [30]. * Graded according to Clavien-Dindo [31].…”
