Complications of Loop Ileostomy Closure: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis of 123 Patients

Abstract: Reversal of loop ileostomy may be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Increasing the delay from creation to closure may result in fewer complications. There is an increased risk in older patients with more comorbidity, particularly when the primary procedure is for diverticular disease with significant peritoneal contamination.

“…There is a risk of a wide range of morbidity associated with both stoma formation and stoma reversal [1,3,5]. Morbidity following formation includes ileus, obstruction, retraction, prolapse, skin problems, and parastomal hernia [4,[6][7][8][9].…”

“…Nevertheless, the advantages of covering stoma have to be contrasted with the eventual complications related to the management of the stoma, as well as with the necessity of a reintervention of intestinal recanalization (including anastomotic complications at the stoma closure site) which is burdened by morbidity and mortality rate particularly in elderly patients and in cases of delayed stoma closure, and that anyway, independently from this, already implies an increase of costs, recoveries and/or hospital stay [6,7]. Quality of life is affected by physical and psychological lifestyle changes, especially in body image and self-concept [8].…”
