Complications of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in Switzerland

Abstract: Although laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a safe procedure, the rate of conversion to open cholecystectomy is still substantial. The conversion rate depends both on the indication and intraoperative complications. There is still a 10.38% morbidity associated with the procedure; however, the incidence of common bile duct injuries, which decreases with growing laparoscopic experience, was relatively low.

“…Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is widely accepted as an effective treatment for benign gallbladder disease, but bile duct injury remains a serious complication, with an incidence of 0.3%–0.7% 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Bile duct injury is often caused by misinterpretation of the anatomical structures rather than by insufficient technical skills 7.…”

“…The incidence of bile duct injury has remained quite stable between 0.33% and 0.5% throughout the early periods of LC 1,2 into the present. [3][4][5][6] Bile duct injuries related to LC seem to be more complicated than after an open procedure. [7][8][9] On many occasions, subsequent treatments have failed in the primary hospital, leading to a sequence of reoperations and various interventions.…”
