Dermal filling has rapidly become one of the most common procedures performed by aesthetic practitioners worldwide. Although the vast majority of treatments are successful and patient satisfaction levels are high, both mild and severe complications have been reported following the injection of many different types of dermal fillers. With the widespread surge of the use of dermal fillers for facial rejuvenation, a new disease entity in the form of adverse outcomes and complications of these cosmetic procedures are being increasingly reported in the literature. In this article, the author reviews the literature surrounding infection post dermal filler injections and infection prevention. The article also discusses how such complications impact the NHS.
