“…Osteomyelitis of the jaws is a relatively rare condition, which may be precipitated by immunosuppression (Koorbusch and Fotos, 1992; Pantaleo et al , 1993). Dental extractions in HIV‐infected subjects, in the developed world, generally heal uneventfully (Porter et al , 1993; Glick et al , 1994). Chronic refractory osteomyelitis has been reported, following dental extraction, as the initial presenting feature of HIV infection (Edelstein et al , 1993; Asseri et al , 1997).…”

“…No relationship was found among complications and virologic, immunologic, or other laboratory values 21 . In another study, a similar percentage (3.7% versus 2.9%) of postextraction complications is seen in patients with both HIV+ and HIV− status 16 . A prospective study by Dodson 22 reported no differences in the complication rates between patients with HIV+ and HIV− status who underwent tooth extraction.…”

“…CLS makes the margins easily accessible for accurate impressions and ultimately results in good marginal adaptation of the restoration. In addition, CLS can achieve longer clinical crowns 7‐11 and reestablish the biologic width 12,13 by removal of hard and soft tissues 14‐16 . The general consensus is that CLS should create ≥3 mm of sound tooth structure between the alveolar crest and the restorative margin 17‐19 .…”

“…We would like to make some comments on the results reported in this study. Post-extraction complication rates were 22.3 for HIVpositive patients and 13.3% for HIV-negative controls; these were considerably higher than those reported in other studies (Porter et al, 1993;Glick et al, 1994). On analysis of the results from the same series, Dodson (1997b) was unable to confirm, as he himself had suggested in an earlier work (Dodson et al, 1994), that the post-operative complication rate increased as the HIV disease became more severe.…”
