Complications in hair transplantation

Abstract: Hair transplantation is a relatively safe surgery and is associated with very few complications. It is a cosmetic surgery so the complications may impact social and psychological aspect of the patient. Every hair transplantation surgeon should be aware of possible complications and techniques for the prevention and techniques of their management. Most of the complications are avoidable and can be minimized by proper surgical technique and wound care. Counseling and discussion with the patient before surgery he… Show more

“…Currently, finasteride and minoxidil are the mainstay treatments for alopecia, although they are not fundamental treatments that induce hair growth, not to mention having various side effects associated with them [289,290]. Hair transplantation is frequently utilized as a fundamental treatment of hair loss but it is an invasive procedure and graft survival rate largely depends on the surgeon [291]. There is a strong unmet need of a minimally invasive treatment that not only retards hair loss but also promotes hair growth.…”

“…But these data are confusing, since in the same paper, telogen effluvium is reported and there is information that hairs are extruded in an anagen phase [1]. Not much is reported on hair loss around operated areas and in donor areas in transplants [2,3,6,8,9]. Loh et al [2] described telogen effluvium around scalp transplanted areas.…”

“…[1][2][3][4] Various degrees of effectiveness have been reported with two relatively new therapy models: follicular units extraction (FUE) with stem cells to hair cloning up to skin transplantation, the so-called follicular units transplantation (FUT). [5][6][7][8] Mesotherapy is performed by multiple superficial dermal microinjections (the name "mesotherapy" means therapy in the middle layer of skin, meso = mesoderm). According to the literature, not so many studies have investigated the potential of mesotherapy in scalp baldness but the direct inoculation into the scalp of vitamins and growth factors and/or corticosteroids/finasteride/minoxidil/dutasteride together with the multiple trauma induced by the micro-injection increase the local release of cytokines and growth factors and resulted in a visible improvement of AGA.…”
