Complication of Hepatic Hydatid Cyst Surgery Presenting as Obstructive Jaundice

Abstract: The liver is the commonest organ affected by hydatid disease. We report a rare case of a 25-year-old female patient who was treated surgically for hepatic echinococcosis two weeks ago with laparoscopic excision of hepatic hydatid cyst with marsupialization and omentoplasty. She then presented with features of obstructive jaundice, which is a known complication following hydatid endocystectomy. Cholangiogram revealed a communication of the residual hydatid cyst with right segmental intrahepatic biliary radicals… Show more

“…The rupture of the hydatid cyst into the bile ducts is a common complication of hydatid disease and leads to mechanical jaundice, acute pancreatitis, cholangitis, or, in prolonged courses, biliary cirrhosis. Other complications are compressive ones with vascular effects (ischemic or portal hypertension-related, Budd-Chiari syndrome), effects on the biliary tract (jaundice), or neighboring organs [2,3].…”

“…Hydatid cyst (HC), scientifically referred to as echinococcosis cyst, is considered to be one of the important zoonotic diseases and has significant public health importance due to the difficulties of the diagnosis [1]. It is a parasitic infection sourced from the cestode of the Taeniidae family [2,3]. These organisms exist in both definitive and intermediate hosts, thereby establishing a complex ecological interplay [3].…”

“…It is a parasitic infection sourced from the cestode of the Taeniidae family [2,3]. These organisms exist in both definitive and intermediate hosts, thereby establishing a complex ecological interplay [3]. Central to the sustenance of this cycle is a transmission mechanism characterized by the propagation of the disease to intermediate hosts, which encompass a spectrum including cattle, sheep, humans, goats, horses, and camels.…”
