This article argues for a shift in the conceptualisation of child trauma recovery programme efficacy studies in occupied Palestine. Nearly all prevalence and programme evaluation studies in Palestine focus on current traumatic events and resultant symptoms, especially post-traumatic stress disorder. To date, no child trauma recovery programme has been evaluated from an intergenerational trauma perspective. Where intergenerational trauma has been explored in the literature, this has been at a conceptual rather than empirical level. In response to this omission, the current article explores intergenerational trauma as a conceptual framework for evaluative research into child trauma recovery programme efficacy in occupied Palestine. Following a review of the intergenerational trauma literature within and beyond Palestine, a framework for evaluation is developed, which includes: historical trauma; collective and individual loss; current-day traumatisation; micro-aggressions; resultant symptoms; and the transmission of intergenerational trauma. Recommendations are provided for future research, practice and policy development in Palestine and beyond.

Treating grief in adolescents is only further complicated by a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). When the loss is traumatic, treatment becomes even more difficult, because mourning can be interrupted by the stigmatizing events of the loss, which leads to feelings of helplessness in the survivor. The case of 15-year-old Manda demonstrates a client with ASD whose traumatic grief symptoms do not respond to traditional approaches to treatment. Despite using therapeutic interventions targeted to clients with ASD and grief, 5 months of work based on complicated grief treatment (CGT) with Manda and her father has not led to any improvements in her suicidality and grief. In this treatment, her slow processing speed and cognitive rigidity seemed to prevent CGT interventions' effectiveness. Additional months using the neuropsychological therapeutic intervention of social medicine, education, exercise, diet, and sleep (SEEDS) by Arden (2015) has resulted in limited progress by helping Manda to develop some global skills in the areas that neuropsychology indicates support general mental health. After months of intensive work, Manda still seems unable to articulate or connect her feelings of loss to her sadness. Based on a literature review of developmental grief processes, Manda would be expected to be showing more understanding of what her loss means to her life moving forward and an ability to articulate the feelings attached to that loss. Until she is able to verbalize her feelings of traumatic loss, therapy will continue to be unable to significantly address her grief and integrate those feelings.

Psychometrics of the PTSD and Depression Screener for Bereaved Youth

Interventions for bereaved children and families range from supportive counseling, designed to promote social connectedness and expression of feelings and thoughts about the deceased, to intensive trauma/grief-specific therapy, designed to ameliorate symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. That said, professionals have few brief assessment instruments to match response and functioning to appropriate interventions. To expedite the screening and referral process for bereaved families, Brown, Goodman, and Swiecicki ( 2008 ) developed the PTSD and Depression Screener for Bereaved Youth, a 19-item measure of bereavement-related history and symptoms of PTSD and depression. The current study is a psychometric evaluation of the Screener for Bereaved Youth. Data were collected from 284 bereaved children, 6-17 years of age (M = 12.4; SD = 2.9). A factor analysis revealed distinct subscales for PTSD (eight items) and depression (four items). The PTSD and depression subscales showed both concurrent and discriminant validity. Endorsement of four items on either subscale was associated with meeting full criteria on more extensive measures of PTSD and depression. These findings are discussed with specific consideration to the multiple systems in which the measure could be used and applications to clinical services.
