Compliance of haemodialysis patients with prescribed medication

Abstract: summary This study was designed to monitor the compliance of haemodialysis patients with their prescribed medicines and to analyse factors associated with non‐compliance. We conducted a transversal and descriptive study of 121 haemodialysis patients. The patient compliance to prescribed medicines was evaluated according to the percentage of tablets prescribed and taken. Gender, duration of dialysis treatment, knowledge about prescribed medicines, and family status were not related to patient compliance. Howeve… Show more

“…The sample size greatly varied from a minimum of 19 participants [ 46 ] to a maximum of 11,732 participants [ 26 ]. Overall, half (n = 22) of the included studies had a sample size of more than 100 participants [ 14 , 23 , 26 , 29 , 32 , 35 , 37 , 38 , 41 , 45 , 47 50 , 52 , 54 , 57 , 58 , 61 , 63 , 66 , 67 ]. Moreover, five studies had more than 1000 participants each [ 14 , 26 , 29 , 41 , 67 ].…”

“…However, the specific method of subjective assessment differed across studies. Thirteen studies [ 23 , 28 , 31 , 48 53 , 56 , 59 62 ] used self-reported measures with a validated questionnaire (Brief Medication Questionnaire (BMQ); Drug Intake Percentage Questionnaire (DIPQ); Modified Immunosuppressive Therapy Adherence Scale (ITAS-M); Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS); Morisky 4-item Green Levine Test (MGLT-4); Morisky 8-item Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8); Medication Adherence Questionnaire (MAQ); and Simplified Medication Adherence Questionnaire (SMAQ)) whereas, 9 studies utilised self-report by patient interview or non-validated questionnaires [ 34 – 36 , 40 , 42 , 57 , 58 , 66 , 67 ].…”

“…Two out of four studies found an association between knowledge of the purpose of the regimen and phosphate levels [ 20 , 22 ]. However, the other two studies found no relationship between knowledge of treatment instructions and adherence to phosphate binding medication [ 26 , 35 ]. Knowledge might be a prerequisite for adherence behaviour but the presence of knowledge alone may not bring about change in behaviour.…”

“…People may have different levels of adherence for different parts of the treatment regimen and therefore adherence to the individual components should ideally be considered in isolation. Indeed, studies that did assess adherence to different parts of the regimen separately not only reported different levels of adherence to the different aspects of treatment but also found that different factors predicted adherence to different parts of the regimen [ 12 - 15 , 18 , 21 , 22 , 26 , 27 , 33 , 35 , 42 - 48 ].…”
