Compliance-based estimation of seismic collapse risk of an existing reinforced concrete frame building

Abstract: Seismic evaluation of existing structures is based on determining the damage likely to occur during the lifetime of these structures due to earthquake ground motion excitation. However, there is not a consensus about the acceptable level of seismic damage, the expected lifetime of these structures, and the seismic hazard level(s) to evaluate the structures at. This paper presents a methodology for a parametric calculation of the seismic collapse risk of an existing Reinforced Concrete (RC) frame building based… Show more

“…Further, given a seismic hazard curve (preferably that of the mean annual frequency of ), the seismic risk is computed by convolving it with the displacement ductility fragility curve (Tsiavos et al. 2021a ). Therefore, the mean annual frequencies for the relevant range of displacement ductility thresholds are obtained.…”

“…In this regard, ref. [49] proposed a methodology for the derivation of fragility curves for existing structures. In the present paper, fragility curves were developed by considering predefined limit states (LS) of the maximum strains (Table 3) at which the probability of exceedance was calculated.…”

“…It should be reiterated that bridges are an important link for communities and their failure needs to be considered with advanced methodologies, such as those proposed by [17][18][19][20]. Moreover, a compliance-based methodology, such as that reported by study [21], for the estimation of the seismic collapse risk of existing buildings and bridges could also be remarkable.…”
