“…The majority of the patients had a history of multiple diagnostic procedures by neurologists and other medical specialists, and started psychiatric treatment more than 12 months after onset of the CD/FND symptoms. On average, 5 years elapsed before presentation at CLGG, which is a specialized center providing treatment to the top 5% most complex cases of CD/FND and other SSRD (van Eck van der Sluijs, de Vroege, van Manen, Rijnders, & van der Feltz‐Cornelis, ). Hence, this sample can be considered as a sample of patients with chronic CD/FND referred to a tertiary care specialized mental Health Institution for SSRD.…”

“…SSD, BDD, and FD occur frequently and are associated with high personal suffering ( 32 36 ), service use ( 37 40 ) and costs ( 3 , 12 , 41 ). They are a burden for patients ( 1 ) and their families ( 42 ), and because of the high level of complexity at diagnostic, treatment, health services and social level ( 43 ), they form a diagnostic and treatment challenge for general practitioners ( 38 , 44 47 ), occupational physicians ( 48 ), medical specialists ( 2 ), psychotherapists, psychiatrists and allied health professionals alike ( 49 , 50 ). Because of high disability, and high medical as well as societal costs, they form a substantial challenge to the population and health policy of the European Union.…”

“…In this study, we compare patients with SSD including all kinds of psychosomatic illnesses in a convenience sample from three different countries, namely Germany, the Netherlands, and China, that enabled us to compare three different health care settings, namely the general hospital inpatient psychosomatic setting (Germany), the specialty mental health outpatient setting providing treatment for SSRD patients with high complexity levels in terms of diagnostic problems, treatment issues and social challenges ( 8 ), in the Netherlands; and the general hospital (China) for SSD. Finally, this way we could compare two different cultures, namely the Western European and the Chinese culture.…”
