Complexes of some first-row transition elements with (–)-spartein

Abstract: Complexes of cobalt(l1). nickel(l1). copper(l1). and zinc(l1). of the general formula [M(spartein)X,], where X = CI-, Br-, or I-, have been prepared and characterised. Magnetic moments, electronic spectra, and the circular dichroism absorption (down to 5000 cm-l) of [Ni(sp)CI,] are reported. The electronic structures of the cobalt(l1) and nickel( II) complexes are discussed in terms of an effective C , chromophoric symmetry. Complexes of manganese-(111) and iron(ll1) have been obtained, but are less well chara… Show more

“…The nickel-(À)-sparteine chloride complex 1 was synthesized according to the literature. 16 (À)-Sparteine (2) was obtained after dissolving (À)-sparteine sulfate (Fluka, Buchs, Switzerland) in a 100 mM sodium hydroxide solution and extraction with tert-butyl methyl ether. For hydrolysis of 1 a 200 mM solution in CHCl 3 (326 mg in 3 mL) was overlaid with 5 mL of a 200 mM aqueous sodium hydroxide solution in a test tube.…”

“…[Fe(1,10-phenanthroline) 3 ] 2ϩ enantiomeric purity was determined using the literature values of ε 510 nm ϭ 11200 mol Ϫ1 dm 3 cm Ϫ1 and ∆ε 545 nm ϭ 20.0 mol Ϫ1 dm 3 cm Ϫ1 for the ∆ enantiomer. [10] The ∆ enantiomer proved to be 90% enantiomerically pure and the Λ enantiomer 103% (suggesting the literature value for ∆ε is an underestimate).…”
