Complexation of uranyl ions by polypyrrole doped by sulfonated and phosphonated polyethyleneimine

Abstract: Branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) was sulfonated by reaction with chloropropanesulfonylchloride and phosphonated by reaction with phosphorous acid and formaldehyde. The accordingly formed polyanions were used as doping agents for polypyrrole (PPy). The amount of doping polyanions into thin films of PPy was measured by Rutherford back-scattering. These films were tested for their capacity to extract uranyl ions from liquid wastes of low level activity. The uranium content was determined by neutron activation ana… Show more

“…In curve b, three new bands at 2841 cm −1 , 1564 cm −1 and 1092 cm −1 were observed because the PEI was incorporated. They were assigned to -CH 2 -group, −NH 2 group and C-N stretching vibration of PEI, respectively [28][29][30][31][32]. But the characteristic absorbance of the primary and secondary amines of PEI, expected at 3357 cm −1 and 3295 cm −1 for the N-H stretch, were masked by the intense -OH stretching vibration of PVA.…”

“…For that, polymeric materials have to be processed as membranes or films on conducting materials in order to be electrically triggered. For example, electricity allows accelerating both the regeneration of ion exchanger films, ion exchanger membranes [10][11][12] or promoting movements of counter ions with conducting polymers combined with ion exchanger materials [13,14]. That electrochemically-assisted ion exchange has numerous advantages over conventional ion exchange processes.…”

“…Recently, hybrid materials consisting of rigid matrices and organic binding sites have been extensively studied for the application to the stationary phase of a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). [11][12][13][14][15] Polymers with complexing ligands are introduced to the surface of inorganic materials by an impregnating process or by covalent bonding.…”
