Complexation of sesquiterpene lactones with cyclodextrins: synthesis and effects on their activities on parasitic weeds

Abstract: Allelochemicals are safer, more selective and more active alternatives than synthetic agrochemicals for weed control. However, the low solubility of these compounds in aqueous media limits their use as agrochemicals. Herein, we propose the application of α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrins to improve the physicochemical properties and biological activities of three sesquiterpene lactones: dehydrocostuslactone, costunolide and (-)-α-santonin. Complexation was achieved by kneading and coprecipitation methods. Aqueous sol… Show more

“…From these compounds, dehydrocostus lactone was found moderately active in inducing seed germination (EC 50 cca 1 × 10 −5 M ) of P. ramosa . However, it was more effective on P. aegyptiaca and excellently active on O. cumana seeds . From synthetic compounds, phthalimide strigolactone mimics have been reported to be efficient in inducing seed germination of broomrapes .…”

“…The compounds 1 – 9 were tested for their bioactivity in an etiolated wheat coleoptile bioassay. The conditions for this bioassay were reported previously [ 31 , 32 ] and replicated in this study, using the same herbicide (Logran ® ) as positive control and the buffer solution as negative control. Wheat ( Triticum aestivum ) was the ‘catervo’ variety.…”

“…Strigolactams and phthalimide derivatives are examples of mimics that strongly stimulate O. cumana , O. minor , P. ramosa and P. aegyptiaca germination . Other families of compounds, such as benzoxazinoids, sesquiterpene lactones, alkaloids, flavonoids or steroids, stimulate parasitic plant germination.…”
