Complex segregation analysis of dental morphological variants

Abstract: A set of 20 morphological variants of the dental crowns and four characteristics of the jaws are tested for probable mode of inheritance using the complex segregation analysis method of Morton et al. (Am. J. Hum. Genet. 23:602-611, 1971). Models tested include three two-allele single-locus models (dominant, codominant, and recessive) and a model employing the polychotomized normal distribution of liability (an additive polygenic model), with transmissibility estimated via maximum likelihood. Most of the traits… Show more

“…The Carabelli trait appears to be under strong genetic control, and there were suggestions of major gene involvement for its expression (Kolakowski et al, 1980;Nichol, 1989;Townsend and Martin, 1992). Some researchers reported low estimates of heritability (Biggerstaff, 1973;Alvesalo et al, 1975;Mizoguchi, 1977), but these results may reflect differences in methodologies between studies.…”

“…Kolakowski et al (1980) noted significant major gene and common sibling environmental effects for Carabelli trait by ap lying a tained from a large number of families living on the Solomon Islands. More recently, Nichol (1989) has also applied segregation variance. rs evertheless, in general it seems for dm2 is a complicating P actor in our analcomplex segregation analysis to I f ata ob-analysis to family data in an attempt to clarify the mode of inheritance of a number of dental crown traits.…”

“…Several studies of heritability of dental traits support this assumption (Mizoguchi, 1977;Townsend and Brown, 1978;Nichol, 1989). As such, differences in trait frequencies between samples are presumed to represent genetic variation between the populations.…”

“…The results of the present study are interpreted under the assumption that dental traits are phenotypic characteristics that reflect genetic differences (Scott and Turner, 1985;Sofaer et al, 1986;Nichol, 1989;Rightmire, 1999). Several studies of heritability of dental traits support this assumption (Mizoguchi, 1977;Townsend and Brown, 1978;Nichol, 1989).…”
