Complex Relational Leadership

Abstract: Development of nursing in the postpandemic future will require active engagement of all nurses. Complex relational leadership in complex adaptive systems is explored through 3 focused areas: professional governance, equitable and inclusive relationships, and clinical practice. Pragmatic examples for each area of focus are offered as a framework for the postpandemic future. A conceptual model was developed to illustrate these relationships.

“…With the concept of making good use of authority, governance in nursing can be viewed as a political activity in hospitals in a broad sense. Just as citizens exercise citizenship, nurses in hospitals should exercise the authority and opportunities given to them to raise their voices and participate in decision-making related to nursing practices ( 38 ). For this purpose, politics as educational content is needed in undergraduate nursing programs so that they can understand the definition of politics and the legislative process ( 39 ) in advance.…”

“…Porter-O’Grady (2019: p39) on the other hand, states that professional governance, an offshoot of clinical governance ‘ is grounded in the clinician’s duty and responsibility to demonstrate personal accountability for ownership of the work’. These distinct, yet overarching principles require key stakeholders within the organisation to define professional practice and set standards of practice while ensuring that clinicians’ actions are in line with those standards (Feistritzer et al 2022, Porter-O’Grady 2019). Establishing collaborative working relationships between various professionals, as well as providing a framework that both supports and advances professional practice, is also a crucial aspect of governance models.…”
