Complex Linkage between Watershed Attributes and Surface Water Quality: Gaining Insight via Path Analysis

Abstract: Understanding the influence of various variables on surface water quality is extremely important for protecting ecosystem health. The principal aim of this study is to assess the direct (DE), indirect (IE) and total effects (TE) of socio-economic, terrestrial and hydrological factors on surface water quality via path analysis through the lens of 15 sub-basins located on Indus basin, Pakistan. Four path models were selected based on Comparative Fit Index (CFI) = 0.999 value. First path model showed that rangela… Show more

“…Changes in human activities will also affect nitrogen loading. For example, in the simulation of the extreme cropland scenario (L1), factors, such as crop types and farming methods, need to be considered together (Khan et al 2021), and in the context of extreme urbanization, urban development types and greening situations must be comprehensively examined. The results varied because of the complexity of the situation.…”

“…Many scholars have applied different methods in different areas, including the Universal Soil Erosion Equation (USLE) ( Fu et al., 2011 ; Wischmeier et al., 1978 ), Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) ( Kulikov et al., 2020 ), Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) ( Zheng et al., 2020 ), Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator (EPIC), and Areal Nonpoint Source Watershed Environment Response Simulation (ANSWERS) ( Bhuyan et al., 2002 ). Some scholars have predicted of model for the transport of nitrates in soils ( Ekeleme et al., 2021 ) and analyzed the relationship between the socio-economic, terrestrial, and hydrological factors on surface water quality via path analysis ( Khan et al., 2021 ). The SCS-CN (soil conservation service curve number) model application was used to estimate runoff from small watersheds in different areas ( Krisnayanti et al., 2021 ; Liu and Li, 2008 ).…”
