The number of global refugees has been rising annually for the last decade. Many of these refugees are housed within camps, in temporary structures, vulnerable to the impacts of flooding. The flood risk of refugees is not well understood. Flood risk guidance available for camp planners and managers is vague, and existing flood risk data is often lacking in the remote areas where camps are typically located. We show how global data should, and should not, be used to assess refugee flood risk in Ethiopia; a country hosting 725,000 refugees, primarily from 4 neighbouring countries, in 24 camps. We find that global population datasets, typically used in national flood risk assessments, do not accurately capture camp populations. Even the most accurate global population datasets are missing three fifths of camp flood exposure. We propose, and test, alternative approaches for representing exposure that combine reported estimates of camp population with data on camp area, building footprints, and population density. Applying these approaches in our national flood risk assessment, we find that 95.8% of camps in Ethiopia are exposed to flooding of some degree and between 143,208 (19.8%) and 182,125 refugees (25.2%) are exposed to a 1% Annual Exceedance Probability flood (100-year return period). South Sudanese refugees are the nationality most exposed to flooding, but Eritrean refugees are the nationality most exposed to flooding with a high risk to life. Promisingly, we find that many camps may be set up in such a way that reduces the exposure of refugees to flooding. Our study demonstrates that global data, augmented with local data, can be useful for understanding the flood risk of refugee camps. The consistent scalable approach can be used as a first-order analysis of risk, identifying risk hotspots, and helping to prioritize further detailed analyses to inform within-camp adaptation.

The current research examines the impact of climate change on Pakistan (social, economic & environmental) and proposed solutions from existing literature. For this purpose, the qualitative research design was adopted, and literature has been taken from the last ten years' papers, articles, reports, and books. However, for the analysis of impacts, the most recent year-2023 literature has been taken from international journals. The result was divided into a total of four themes: a) social, b) economic, c) environmental impacts, and d) mitigation strategies for climate change in Pakistan. Results and findings showed that climate change has negatively affected the social, economic, and environmental well-being of the people of Pakistan, especially, people who are associated with agriculture and livestock. Frequent droughts, urban flooding, land-sliding, cyclones, earth-quick, etc., not only disturb social life but also have several negative economic implications such as decreases the per capita income, loss of Gross Domestic Products (GDP) and food security and safety. Though, Pakistan, being a developing country, has signed many agreements with international organizations like United Nations (UN), World Bank (WB), etc to overcome the negative effects of climate change. Despite strategies and efforts, still Pakistan has failed to achieve its targets due to a lack of funds, political disinterest, lack of awareness among common people about climate change, and administrative inefficiencies as well. The political and administrative seriousness about climate change can make the possible outcomes to overcome the inverse implications of climate change in Pakistan.

Decision-makers, researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders often struggle with selecting and prioritizing strategies to manage climate change risks. While recent research extensively explores this issue, the emphasis has largely been on regions other than Africa. This is significant, considering Africa’s anticipated exposure to various and severe impacts of climate change. This study applied a two-stage model that integrates the Step-Wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) and Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment (WASPAS) methods within a unique framework under the influence of spherical fuzzy (SF) conditions. In the initial stage, SF-SWARA determines the relative importance of the criteria, while the subsequent stage involves the SF-WASPAS method to rank the strategies. While the most critical challenges are limited access to finance and inadequacies in climate data, scenarios, and impact models, the solution to be considered is the promotion of a well-coordinated capacity-building programme. Furthermore, a comprehensive sensitivity analysis was conducted to validate the applicability of the proposed model. This research not only identifies and explains the challenges associated with climate change risks management in the African context but also significantly contributes to the body of knowledge by outlining and prioritizing the strategies required to address these challenges.
