Complex adaptive systems and their relevance for nursing: An evolutionary concept analysis

Abstract: This study aimed to analyse the concept of "complex adaptive systems." The construct is still nebulous in the literature, and a further explanation of the idea is needed to have a shared knowledge of it. A concept analysis was conducted utilizing Rodgers evolutionary method. The inclusive years of bibliographic search started from 2005 to 2015. The search was conducted at PubMed©, CINAHL© (EBSCO host©), Scopus©, Web of Science©, and Academic Search Premier©. Retrieved papers were critically analysed to explore… Show more

“…Also, ST theory posits that systems are self-organizing in nature, and that actions would need to be context-specific (e.g. adapted to the local 'complex adaptive systems [81][82][83][84]), hence more specific recommendations for action hardly could be generalizable -and especially so for a worldwide perspective. Finally, we understand that the prescription of more specific action from the perspective of the authors could stifle innovation and, on the other hand, recognizes that multiple stakeholders have a key role in operationalization, in addition to debating or challenging the strategic leavers identified.…”

“…Notarnicola et al. (2017) describe health care as a complex adaptive system and dynamic web, where the individuals, both singularly and in teams, act and react to each other, behaving in a manner that can be unpredictable and which is constantly adapting to the environment. The notion, advanced by some theories, that the nurse interacts solely with the patient and is unfettered by managerial, bureaucratic, socio‐political, economic, regulatory, professional and accreditation related considerations, belies the modern complex reality.…”

“…This example also shows pathophysiology itself as a having inherent complexity as a subject, and thereby being a suitable focus for a tutorial integrating course concepts moving away from a 'silo' approach of content-driven courses to create complex system structures of knowledge. [2,17,18] The introduction of concept mapping in Phase 3 had the greatest observed success as a learning tool within the tutorials. The concept map is becoming widely used in nursing education and it has been found to facilitate the transition from rote memorization to meaningful active learning and to promote the development of critical thinking skills required for 21st-century health care.…”

“…The concept of complex adaptive systems as inherently unpredictable, composed of interacting elements, dynamic in nature, exhibit emergency in their ability to learn and adapt to new and changing conditions. [17] Applying complexity to nursing education provides a framework for creating approaches that promote learning as emergent and dynamic rather than solely content-driven and inherently static. [18] One way to develop these thinking patterns is a learner-centered approach [19] which can be based on PAL experiences and open discussion formats.…”
