AbstractGraduate students in a master or PhD program tend to naturally concentrate their efforts on the understanding of theoretical issues related to their main research area of interest. This will frequently lead to a cultural shock when they, after concluding their program, enter or return to the job market.Commonly these professionals are asked to analyze, develop and/or implement projects based not only on technical premises but also on solid and very well supported economical feasibility studies. Frequently the common graduate academic background does not prepare students for those tasks.The importance of a thorough understanding of economic issues and associated risks is even more noticeable in the oil industry, where uncertainties related to oil and gas reserves, prices and government regulations make any long term project extremely risky.Based on the abovementioned factors, a graduate course was designed and implemented in order to prepare the students to deal with the main economic issues and challenges faced by the industry. Besides the basics on economic engineering, the course covers advanced material related to budgeting, scheduling and corporate planning.Monte Carlo simulation, economic decision tools, risk analysis for oil industry projects, investment risk and simulation, economic analysis of operations, production forecasts and its associated costs and expected profits are also studied.Furthermore, the students are also required to prepare a project where actual challenges from the industry are analyzed under the perspective of the risks and uncertainties involved. In the project, associated costs and economic results also have to be determined and scrutinized. All projects are presented in a seminar at the end of the course. In addition, a "Newsletter" analyzing current problems, challenges and industry development is produced weekly by the group during the duration of the course.These two tools, the project and the Newsletter, have raised in participants a great deal of interest for economic matters related to each one's individual area of expertise.The paper details the course experience providing examples of main projects developed as well as participants' feedback.

Case Studies for Improving Completion Design Through Comprehensive Well-Performance Modeling

Optimal completion design has been practiced over the past years through detailed well performance evaluation, and improved completion selection workflow. Six field case studies will be discussed in this paper to demonstrate the methodology to achieve the best completion design under different field and operating conditions. The focus of the field case studies covers well production prediction, well performance evaluation, optimum well length assessment, cost effective and production efficient completion strategy, skin estimate from well production history, water/gas control, impact of casing integrity, and sensitivity assessment on reservoir permeability, mechanical skin, non-Darcy skin, flowing bottomhole pressure (BHP), original oil saturation, and so on. The wells to be discussed include single, dual lateral horizontal wells, and highly deviated wells. The produced fluids include oil and/or gas and water. The most popular completion options, such as open hole, slotted liner, inflow control devices (ICD), intelligent well completions (DIACS), perforated cemented liner, wire wrapped screen or standalone screen, gravel pack, and frac pack, expandable sand screen, alternating standalone screen and blank pipe, etc, have been either applied and/or evaluated in the case studies. Introduction Well completion plays a critical role in well design, and more importantly, the performance of the well in its entire life. With more and more advanced well completion options deployed in new wells, especially in the deep and ultra-deepwater environment, the cost and the impact of the well completion is too significant to be ignored. An appropriate well completion design would lead to reduced well cost, enhanced hydrocarbon production, minimized water breakthrough, but more importantly, improved well performance and ultimate hydrocarbon recovery. The major objective for this study is to share some lessons learned from the design and evaluation of well completion configurations in a number of field applications, including:Dual Lateral Horizontal Well - Could we leave the perforation gun in the hole?Horizontal Well - What would be the production from an expandable sand screen (ESS) well?Gravel Packed Horizontal Well - What would be the skin for the well?Horizontal Well - Can we achieve cost saving through efficient completion design?Highly Deviated Gas Well - What would be the best completion strategy?Horizontal Well - What would be the optimum length of the horizontal well? The strategy and workflow that should aid to achieve an efficient completion design in regard to both cost saving and production efficiency will be illustrated while discussing the case histories. Literature Review Completion optimization design is far from new. A significant number of papers have been published in the SPE literature, covering a variety of topics such as: completion design, well performance evaluation, completion improvement, completion failure diagnostics, completion challenges, potential cost saving, and so on. Selected papers on the topics mentioned above are briefly introduced below.
