Completing the view – histologic insights from circular AAA specimen including 3D imaging

Anna-Leonie Menges,
Maja Nackenhorst,
Johannes R. Müller
et al.

Abstract: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a pathologic enlargement of the infrarenal aorta with an associated risk of rupture. However, the responsible mechanisms are only partially understood. Based on murine and human samples, a heterogeneous distribution of characteristic pathologic features across the aneurysm circumference is expected. Yet, complete histologic workup of the aneurysm sac is scarcely reported. Here, samples from five AAAs covering the complete circumference partially as aortic rings are investigat… Show more

“…Our group previously demonstrated an uneven distribution around the circumference of the aneurysm wall in a series of five patients. [42] Here, samples were taken from the (left) anterior wall only, in line with previous studies. [12, 19] Naturally, type II error cannot be ruled out, however, might be small given the 364 patient samples provided.…”
